A poky little log cabin in a Swedish forest outside a small town called Bollnas, three hours north of Stockholm. The cabin typically a Falu Rudfarg (red), dusted with snow and ice, overlooked a beautiful frozen lake. The cabin not set for winter living was quite cold and the fateful plumbing had already frozen over. A fire warmed the frigid (and virgin) canvas and a Merlot warmed the bitter cockles of the Australian Artist. This was the studio for James Roseler as he painted his “Swedish exhibition” (Drunk on Falu Red) over a 3 month stay in Sweden.
Nothing but a dense silence and space. A hush, and a peace, outside and within.
Water to clean brushes was bought up from a running spring 50 metres from the studio, and the wood for the fire (prepared years ago) was collected from an old timber hut behind the cabin. The Cabin had to be toasty so that the stubborn paint would dry, and the stubborn painter would not die.
In the end, the studio was full of 22 completed paintings, as well as body of drawings, that will be exhibited at the Kulturkiosken gallery in August 2008. All the paintings where painted on board that had been primed with the same Falu Rudfarg (red) paint that the cabin was coated in.
